Baby Strollers
101: How to buy the best baby stroller!
If you are thinking of buying a baby stroller for a baby shower gift, the
new parents are extremely blessed to have you as a friend or relative.
There are so many costs associated with becoming a parent. New parents
need to buy a tone of things, several of which are big purchases (baby
crib, baby bedding,
infant car seat, nursery furniture, and
the list goes on). If you are experienced at purchasing a stroller than
you may just need to freshen up on the stroller safety standards and
regulations. If you are not sure what to look for when deciding on
which stroller to choose than this site is great place for you to start
your shopping process. Below is a list of features that you want to
look for.
Safety First:
Look for strollers that are made strong, and sturdy. Make sure they
have either a five-point harness, or a three-point harness (strollers
with five-point harnesses are preferable). Stroller safety is so
important that I have dedicated an entire page to offering advice on how
to assess safety features; for further safety standards see stroller
safety guidelines.
Stroller Size:
Standard sized strollers are larger and bulkier than a lightweight
stroller, however standard strollers are recommended for newborns and
infants. Lightweight strollers are not recommended until the child is
walking, as most of these strollers require the child to have a very
strong neck and should be able to hold his/herself up for at least 40
minutes straight. Standard sized strollers are great for mothers too,
they usually come equipped with a basket at the bottom that can carry or
hold a diaper bag, purse, and shopping bags. Lightweight strollers do
not allow you to pack along extra baggage easily; these strollers work
best when you are just going for a stroll. The only downside to
standard sized strollers is that they require more room to store (more
trunk space), and are often heavy and awkward to fit into the trunk of a
car.
Comfort:
Make sure that the height of the stroller is optimal. Mom or dad should
not have to hunch down to push the stroller. If the stroller is too
short mom and dad will get a sore back. Choose a stroller with a
comfortable handle, nothing slippery or furry. Test the stroller’s
comfort and ease of driving, for example how does it corner? If the
strollers wheels rattle when you walk fast then I suggest you keep
looking. If the stroller is hard to navigate around the department
store, than again, I suggest you test another style stroller.
Stroller Features:
Look for
features such as organizer trays for the parent and food trays for the
baby or toddler. If you are buying a stroller equipped with an infant
carrier look for toy bars, and don’t forget to test the
safety features of the infant carrier.
Strollers come in many
designs and include many features such as:
-
Full recline
strollers and travel systems for infants or toddlers. It is a
infant car seat, infant carrier and stroller all in one traveling
system.
-
Convenience
strollers for use of toddlers up to 4 years in age
-
Umbrella strollers
or lightweight strollers are excellent for portability and
convenience. These strollers are only recommended for use with
infants that do not require head or neck support.
-
Jogging strollers
are for mothers or fathers who love to take their child jogging or
hiking through some trails. Theses are not recommended for
newborns, but can be used with babies aged 4 months old and up.
-
Double Strollers
are for twins or siblings. You can choose from side by side or
front to back (tandem) strollers, whichever you find most convenient
for turning corners and packing away into your trunk.
